Thomas Malthus- British economist saw the effects of population explosion....crowded slums, hungry families and unemployment. He studied about crowded slums, hungry families and unemployment and wrote the book An Essay on the Principle of Population (as pictured below)
He tried to understand what was happening with all the change taking place in the early Industrial Revolution, more thinkers tried to find natural laws that would govern the world of buisness and economics
Laissez-Faire Economics
-people believed that government should not interfere in the economy
-in the early 1800's the middle class embraced this idea and called it laissez-faire or the "hands off" approach
-the free market idea meant that goods would be produced at lower prices so that everyone would be able to afford them
-capitalism would be used to reinvest profits
Malthus Holds Bleak Veiw
-Thomas Malthus predicted that the population would outpace the food supply
-the only checks on the population growth were....he urged families to have less children, discouraged charitable handout and vaccinations (war, disease, and famine)
-his view ended up being wrong
- the population did grow but the food grew with it, and soon the population became lower and was no longer a problem
Utilitarians For Limited Government
- utilitarianism->the idea that the goal of society should be "the greatest happiness for the greatest number"
Socialist Thought Emerges
-socialism->the people as a whole rather than private individuals would own and operate the means of production the farms, factories, railways, and other large buisnesses that distributed goods
